Yoga for Autism
This offering is born from my personal journey as an Autism Mommy and Yoga Teacher...
We raised our little man with yoga to help him navigate his emotions and manage the anxiety he was inheriting from me . His team of doctors and therapists have told us what an immense difference his personal yoga practice has made with his physical strength and his ability to stay connected with his body, our world and his emotions.
If you're reading this, then you understand the special demands of being a parent or caretaker to someone on the autism spectrum. To layer in added difficulty, each child is different and their needs may differ from day to day.
My Yoga for Autism program offers two parts to help children calm and energize their bodies, develop sensory and body awareness, begin to understand self-regulation, enhance fine and gross motor skills, learn to stay ahead of their anxiety, support their exploration and independence, nurture their self-esteem and begin to create connection within the body, mind and spirit.
The first is individual sessions of 30 minutes for little children and their parents/caretakers and one hour for older children and young adults. The intention of this offering is to share what I have learned from my therapeutic yoga studies, the knowledge I have gained from our 3.5 year yoga for autism practice and to help others learn to connect with their bodies, enhance their strength, balance and mobility, to create their own stillness/calmness within and to be empowered by their yoga practice. Each session will focus on a different flow in order to explore different poses. We will meet, in-person or distance, for an initial complimentary interview to make sure that we will be a good match. Then we will go through an assessment in order to create a plan for the session(s) and support the ultimate goal of creating a home/personal practice. These sessions will include yoga, breathe work, crystal singing bowls, mindfulness exercises and discussion of how to incorporate these techniques into real life...how to use their yoga to help create calm and connection off of their yoga mats...
The second part of my Yoga for Autism program is for teachers, care-takers, parents and therapist to learn to incorporate yoga into their child's care. This training will teach you to connect with the sensory, emotional and awareness issues many children with Autism experience. Most traditional therapies address the executive functions and social interaction skills. Layering in a yoga practice will support children to sustainably process the traditional therapies and their world. This training is available in two parts (details below). The training will cover the benefits of yoga and exercise for children with autism, how to successful incorporate yoga into the a classroom or autism protocol, breakdown of poses, short sequences, breathe and relaxation work. There will also be a short discussion on the business aspect such as waivers for teachers and therapists.
